Early signs of labor

Stage 1 — active labor

When labor starts

Move {mom} to her whelping box (or wherever she's chosen — don't fight her).
Dim lights. Keep household quiet. Only her favorite people in the room.
Wash your hands. Keep them clean throughout.

When each puppy is born — 8 steps

Most of the time {mom} handles this. Your job: watch, log, step in only if something's wrong.

Puppy emerges in sac. {mom} usually licks it open within 1 min. If she doesn't (common with first litters), gently tear the sac away from the face.
Clear the airway. Wipe nose + mouth. If there's fluid, use bulb syringe: squeeze, insert, release.
Rub briskly with towel to stimulate breathing. They should cry/squeak within 30 seconds.
Cord: {mom} usually chews through it. If not — tie thread ~2.5cm from belly, cut on placenta side with sterilized scissors. Dab stump with iodine.
Place puppy at a nipple. Nursing in first hour gives colostrum (immunity).
Log the puppy in the app — time, sex, weight, markings, collar color.
Reset timer. Next puppy usually 30–60 min later (up to 2 hours).
Placenta follows each puppy within 15 min. {mom} may eat 1–2 (normal). Count them — should match puppies.

Healthy newborn signs

Pink tongue and gums
Active, moving, crawling toward warmth
Crying when picked up
Latches and nurses within first hour
Feels warm (cold puppy = emergency)

⚠ Emergency — weak or distressed puppy

Not breathing: rub vigorously with towel; gently swing head-down (supporting head + neck) to drain fluid; repeat.
Cold: warm in your hands or against your skin. Never put a cold puppy directly on a heating pad.
Weak / not nursing: rub small dab of Karo syrup on gums.
Still struggling after 5 min → SOS to vet.

All expected placentas have passed
> 2 hours since last puppy with no contractions

Vet check within 24–48 hrs after delivery — confirm everything passed.
