When each puppy is born — 8 steps

Most of the time {mom} handles this. Your job: watch, log, step in only if something's wrong.

  1. Puppy emerges in sac. {mom} usually licks it open within 1 min. If she doesn't (common with first litters), gently tear the sac away from the face.
  2. Clear the airway. Wipe nose + mouth. If there's fluid, use bulb syringe: squeeze, insert, release.
  3. Rub briskly with towel to stimulate breathing. They should cry/squeak within 30 seconds.
  4. Cord: {mom} usually chews through it. If not — tie thread ~2.5cm from belly, cut on placenta side with sterilized scissors. Dab stump with iodine.
  5. Place puppy at a nipple. Nursing in first hour gives colostrum (immunity).
  6. Log the puppy in the app — time, sex, weight, markings, collar color.
  7. Reset timer. Next puppy usually 30–60 min later (up to 2 hours).
  8. Placenta follows each puppy within 15 min. {mom} may eat 1–2 (normal). Count them — should match puppies.
Healthy newborn signs
  • Pink tongue and gums
  • Active, moving, crawling toward warmth
  • Crying when picked up
  • Latches and nurses within first hour
  • Feels warm (cold puppy = emergency)
⚠ Emergency — weak or distressed puppy
  • Not breathing: remove any membrane from the face, wipe the nose and mouth, gently suction visible fluid with a bulb syringe, then rub and dry with a warm towel.
  • Cold: wrap the puppy in a warm towel and use controlled indirect warmth. Avoid direct contact with heating pads.
  • Weak, cold, or not nursing: contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not give food, liquid, syrup, or medication unless they tell you to.
  • Breathing difficulty or no response: call the emergency vet now while continuing their instructions.

Signs labour may be pausing or finished
  • She stops straining and relaxes
  • She's calmly nursing/cleaning puppies
  • All expected placentas have passed
  • > 2 hours since last puppy with no contractions
These signs do not confirm that every puppy or placenta has passed. If you are unsure, contact your veterinarian. Arrange a newborn and mother examination within 24 hours, or sooner if advised.
